Went fishing today at Pipestone Lake in Michigan with a fellow firefighter I work with. We got to the lake
around 9:30. The water temp was 50 degrees. The weather didn't look like it was going to be too bad. Called for partly cloudy, high of 53 and chance for
a spotty shower. Well, it "spotted" us and soaked us for about an hour or so.
We couldn't believe it and did that rain make it cold!!
So we were throwing spinnerbaits along the shoreline and one good thing was that Brent hooked into a decent largemouth for his first fish of the year. Now
Brent has not got out this year yet until today and I have been telling him of the big bass that this lake has in it. So it was very fitting that he catch the
first one and it be a good one. It weighed 3 lbs 12 oz.
Here is the proud fisherman!! I teased him and said "Hey, you just caught your biggest bass of the year!!"
So we continue fishing the shoreline and catch 2 dinks. We caught all of our fish on spinnerbaits except for the dink I caught which hit
a crankbait. AJ, it was the one you made me, thanks!! I know bigger fish will come on it. All of our fish came from about 5' of water around any weeds
that are still left behind. Wind blown shores is where we seemed to catch them at. So now it has been about 2 hours since our dinks that we caught and decide
to move to another wind blown shore. Now the sun is out and clear skys ruled. There I finally hook up with a fish that about took the rod out of my hands.
Now Brent's fish did not fight at all when he caught it. Too cold I thought. Well when I caught mine it fought like crazy, very active!! Lipped it in
the boat, weighed it and couldn't believe my eyes. The exact same weight as Brent's, 3 lbs. 12 oz.
Here is a picture of our "clone fish".
Fished for about another hour and Brent caught another dink and another keeper that weighed 1 lb. ...............you guessed it 12 oz. All in all it was a
tough day for just a few bites, but at least I was able to show him what kind of fish are in this lake. We caught 6 fish today, 3 of them keepers. Water did
hit 52.5 degrees but most of the time was 51.5 degrees. Our 3 fish weighed 9 lbs. 5 oz.
Brent with his 2 keepers.
Including Brent's fish, mine today, and the other 3 times I have been here this year, I (we) have caught 4 fish over 3 and a quarter pounds a piece from
this lake. All I need to do now is get that up about 2 more lbs. to the 5 lb. range.
Had to throw this one in for the BPS contest Rick!!
