I have mixed emotions on this incident.

Anyone that fishes ice knows there is a chance for disaster. Common sense is the rule that gets you back safely.

If you fish the big ice then you need to be aware that the chances are multiplied many times over.
Just wind is enough to do the job on the Great Lakes but everyone needs to be aware that there are other mitigating circumstances, such as the Coast Guard.
If you venture out, you alone are responsible for your actions. There is no way the Coast Guard can go up and down the shoreline and announce at every forlorn spot that there will be cutter activity.
Anyone of those stranded fishermen would have given $50.00 to someone to put them back on shore.

I love ice fishing and I always wanted to try the big water but it just didn't work out.
As in all things, you pay your money and you make your choice.
