At 4:30 A.M. the stars and moon shone brightly. The storms of the day before had passed, giving us little rain. A cold front had moved in behind them making it
nearly 20 degrees cooler than the day before. Beth and I arrived early at the lake and launched our boat in the dark. Several boats were already tied up at the
dock.
At 7:00 A.M. John Bircher launched us and the race was on . Beth and I got to the bank we had been fishing for several weeks and began our day. We made two passes on this bank without a bite. We tossed a variety of offerings but had no takers.
After arriving at Plan B bank. I did manage to catch a little 11 inch Large Mouth. Not quite big enough for a boat ride to weigh in.
Around 11:30 A.M. Beth switched to a 4 inch Berkley Power Worm and tossed it alongside a pontoon boat. I saw her set the hook and watched as her line raced towards the boat. As I stood with dip net in hand the big bass slipped the hook and got off right at the boat. What a toad it was. Beth just never quite got over losing that one and beat herself up over it all day. Nothing I could say to her seemed to help. We headed back to the ramp and the parking lot to load up and go to weigh in.
As we watched the lucky few gather beside Birchers boat with their sacks of fish we did notice that no really heavy sacks or really big fish were apparent. L.C. Hatley and Gary Harris weighed in with a big bass contender of 3.62 pounds and another fish giving them a grand total of 5 pounds even. John and Carol Bircher also had two fish weighing 4.98 pounds. Damon Castle and his partner Tom Jackson weighed in two fish at 3.14 lbs. Several singles were weighed in also. None of them were big enough to place in the money.
It had been a pleasant day to be on the water but the fishing was not very good as 27 anglers fished and only 13 fish were caught and brought back to weigh in. This day had certainly been a testament to the effects of a severe cold front and how it can affect bass fishing.
It was a beautiful day once again with a slight breeze and cooler temperatures, Neither of us would have wanted to be anywhere else. I learned something too. Beth taught me a few new words when she lost that fish . I hope that I never have to use them ........Jim
