With this being my 1st top 8 ever (last year 1st yr with a club) I was just excitied to have the chance to compete in a tournament with alot of the guys that I
have heard of before. This tournament is by far the biggest I have ever fished (102 guys) so just the whole feel of a big tournament was awesome.
Day 1 I met my partner Steve Miller from Decatur IN @ 4:50 am and got everything moved in his boat, and I am still on cloud 9 just being in this type of atmosphere. We are boat 29 so were in the middle of the pack and due back at 2:30. We start on Syrcuase and it is a cool AM low 50's. I start throwing a wacky rig and about 40 minutes in I get a 14" awesome I get to weigh a fish in my day is made! Then the fishing goes cold so we decided to move to Wawasee.
I continue fishing a wacky rig (senko) and Steve does also with a more finese style worm. I catch another 15" and as I getting it out of the net Steve get's one so i get the fish out of the net and hold my fish and net his 1st keeper. then 5 minutes later Steve nets another 15".
We head to a huge flat with islands etc. I start throwing a beaver tail and wack a nice 3.5# (best fish ever for me in a tourny). About 40 minutes later I land number 4 15".
we finish day 1
Me 4 fish weighing 8.20# (2nd palce)
Steve 3 fish weighing 6.3# (5th place)
As you can see the bite was really tough there were alot of 1 and 2 fish weigh in and I heard 48 no fish out of 102.
I am more excited than anything now I could have never imagined I actualy had a chance to go to state.
Day 2 we decide to head straight to Wawasee and it was slow Steve caught a bunch of shorts, but could not get a keeper. Then about noon I finally got about a 2.5#. Steve then got about a 1.5# so we were going to weigh fish in!
So I fisnished with 10.52#
Steve finished with 7.2 #
Steve ended up finsihing 15th and made the final cut spot, and I ended up 5th place. Another guy from our club Tony Hubbard finished 4th. Our club finished 2nd.
So needless to say even though I didn't get $$ (1st and big bass only got $$) it was still a great experiance as Steve was a great guy, and it will be hard to forget my 1st top 8! So now we are fishing in Southern IN August 11, 12 at Rocky point on the Ohio River.
Thanks
Kevin
