I fished at Lake Mecosta, MI during vacation the second week of June. The first day I hit the lake with my wife and youngest son, all in kayaks. At the ramp a guy was pulling his boat out and told me they were hitting top water, suspended in about 15 feet of water. The water was clear with visibility down about 8 feet. Air temperature was probably 75, water temp about 70. Was learning how to use my new fish finder and paddling around the lake which was mostly 5 -6 feet deep where we started. I eventually found some deeper water so I pulled out my rod with the popper. On my first cast, before I was ready, something pretty good sized blew up on my lure. About five casts later I landed a 17-1/2 inch largemouth. I ended up with a few smaller fish on the popper and did some paddling around. My wife and son caught a few bluegill, and two small bass.

We fished at Lower Evans Lake but a nasty cold front pretty much shut everything down. Great looking lake, stained water and tons of weeds and cabbage. Caught one in the lily pads when I threw a stick worm after a blow-up on a hollow body frog.

The next time out on Mecosta I picked up a couple of decent bass in a little pocket near some reeds. I saw a lot of bluegills and bass cruising under my kayak there. On my way over to the area where the top water bite was the first time out, I saw an area with bunch of weeds on the fish finder and paddled circled back to drop anchor. About 2-1/2 hours later, in the middle of a mostly sunny day, I had caught about 10 rock bass and 10 largemouth bass from that same spot. All but one on that spot was caught on a cream and watermelon Senko. My best numbers day kayak fishing so far.
