It was 430 AM when I followed Cast out the front door. The waxing moon shone brightly on my ankle high lawn as I thought about mowing the damn stuff again. I
didn't think long on that subject though. It was Saturday morning and time to start final preparations for the tournament we would fish today.
After a cup of coffee, I fed Cast and the cat their breakfast. I stepped into the garage , raised the door and noticed that the moon was no longer visible. The sky had become overcast. Thunder storms had been predicted for today and I hoped that they would hold off until after noon. Beth and I will not fish in an electrical storm. Losing an entry fee is always better than losing your life.
Beth and I arrived at the ramp. A good crowd had already gathered. We noticed a few new faces gathered around John and Carol Birchers vehicle. Carols sign up sheet was growing as was the weekly pot.
The 7AM blast off consisted of 37 anglers in boats of various descriptions and sizes. I believe that this was the biggest crowd that we have had this year. It was great to see such a large enthusiastic crowd.
Beth and I started off about midway up the lake. We fished some top waters, some spinner baits and some soft plastics in a bay that is sometimes hot for us and then sometimes not. Today, it was NOT. The sun quickly burned away the cloud cover and left us with crystal clear blue bird skies. Later in the day the clouds returned but were high thin and wispy. Then puffy and flat bottomed as the wind picked up . We knew that this signaled a change of weather fronts and that storms would be on the way.
We finally boated a 12 1/4 inch bass. Once again we would not be skunked at weigh in. After trying several different locations and depths, we opted to head for weigh in.
After trailering our boat, we noticed that some folks had left early. No doubt it had been a tough day for most of us. We saw Larry Sali weighing in a nice bag of 4 . Several others were waiting in line with some really nice sacks of fish. The Gilliland brothers , Mike and Doug had a nice bag of 5 fish totaling 8.98 Pounds. Ron Butler and Bud Dotson teamed up this week and had 7 for a weight of 14.66 pounds. Frank Sylvester and Ray Wolshire again had a 5 fish bag that went a whopping 17.40 pounds. Their Big Bass was 4.86 pounds.
Out of the 37 anglers, 41 fish were brought to the scales. Not a really great number considering the number of people who fished. It seems like most of the fish came from the upper end of the Lake where the water is shallow.
Beth and I had a great time as usual though and are looking forward to next weekend. We hope there is a big crowd again next week.
