I pre-fished the Sat. prior to the tourney with my girlfriend. I caught one over 5 & we both caught some other keepers. Had some good feelings about the
lakes although I was worried the total acreage might be too small for a 2 day event.
Bass Assassins annual 2-day Classic was a wet one to say the least. I'm glad my girlfriend talked me into staying at the Barbee Hotel rather than tent camp with the rest of the club!! Several reports of leaking tents & restless sleep due to thunder. Only 12 boats showed up. Guessing the nasty weather detered some.
Friday's start was windy with heavy rain. My 1st bite of the day was a 22" fish within site of the ramp. Sad thing is it only weighed 3.81. As it turned out, it was good enough for big bass for day one. Caught several under docks. I had my limit by 11:45 so I sat down to have a "now I can relax" cigar. First cast after the smoke I got a tug next to a pontoon. The fish came directly toward the boat & to the break. Next thing I know, a 4 lb'r jumps within 2 feet of the boat with about 6 feet of line between him & the rod tip. I got him in the net (one of those rubber-easy on the fish types). The bass promptly "trampolined" out & I made a paniced stab at him only to hit him directly in the jaw & knock the hook free!!! I think the good Lord is trying to tell me to ditch the stogies!!! Went to the little lake & fished some schoolers that reminded me of Hamilton but the fish were not of the same quality. Managed to cull one of my skinny dock fish. At the weigh in, my 9.84lb limit was good enough for the lead. My girlfriend's 14 yr. old nephew Dalton was close behind with 9.01......
Day two started with the area being under a tornado watch & heavier wind/rains than the day before!! I fished the spot of my big fish from day one & caught a nice 3 lb fish to get the day started. The wheels came off from that point & all I could muster was shorts (lots of them!) I visited the spot I lost the "circus" bass 3 times but the coward wouldn't show me his face again!! Again to the little lake & the schoolers. Again lots of action but seems the big ones were too full from their gorging on the small shad schools. I did manage one small keeper to end the day with 4+ lbs.
Mike Klavinski from Fremont managed to find a spot with better fish on day 2. He only got 6 lbs from it on day one but the bigger fish moved into a culvert there & he got 12+ lbs from it on day two to come from 4th on day one to win with 18+ total! I finished 2nd with 14+ while 14 yr old Dalton Fowler finished 3rd with 13+ lbs. You all will be hearing more from this boy. He has the 6th (fish) sense!!
