Prefished in North Snow Bay for about 10 minutes. Hooked one 15 1/2 incher and saw many others. I cruised through on high and was just looking and fan
casting. Went to the second basin of James and whacked a bunch of shorts and had one keeper on. Went by Sowles bay and caught another keeper. I fished
really fast and covered a bunch of water. I was looking forward to tourney day.
Tourney day comes and we blast off to the bay. I should have known it would be that kind of night. About five minutes in, I pull my worm out from some pads and say to my patner, "A turtle is following my bait back to the boat." Well it wasn't a turtle but a dogfish hellbent on eating. Before I made my cast back to it, I told my partner to get the net. He was getting the net as I cast the worm toward the fish. Immediately the fish gobbles the lure only to somehow come unbuttoned. It would have won junk fish easily plus how do you miss a dogfish. Off around the bay we go but we are in trouble. We are catching some shorts but even they aren't eating very well. And, we weren't spotting the fish like I had. After an hour, we got out of the bay and went to the feather beds. We pulled up from deep water and I tell my partner to look at that fish up on the edge. It is a 4+ just sitting in a sandy spot. I skip my lure past it and it turns and heads toward my bait. Unfortunately it kept going. Rats. I then skipped some boats and spooked another nice keeper off the flat. Not under boats but maybe biting on the flat. So we fish the middle with no takers. Finally I hook a keeper and drag it 15 feet and it pops off. Again this scenario plays out with me having a fish just come unbuttoned. That is three fish that should be in the well and there isn't even any water in it yet. I finally get rid of the Owner hook and go back to the Gammie. I don't lose anymore fish but unfortunately catch just shorts. We went to Jimmerson and didn't do very well either.
Some people were on them though and it took almost 10 pounds to win. Our classic is this Sunday on Clear Lake.
