Fished Woodland lake this morning with my good buddy Jim. We stayed away from Lake Erie today which probably will come back to haunt us.
We had mixed reports on the winds, and didn't want to take any chances.
Needless to say, the winds never came.
Woodland lake's basic layout is located below. It's located near Brighton Michigan.
It's a pretty fun lake to fish with lots of twists, turns, points, flats, weeds, pads, etc.. Looked like everything was set up for a good day. All except for the high pressure that had moved in. We didn't think it would affect the fishing too much.
The day started at the boat ramp with some entertainment. We arrived around 6:20 am, and there was already a bass boat putting in. Three guys were getting ready to head out. Just before they went out, the 3rd guy was pushing the boat off the dock when he started to do the splits!
Next thing you know, he's in the water. Gets himself back up on the
dock and is a little shook up. His two buddies in the boat were rolling with laughter!
It seemed as though they couldn't stop. Well I'm expecting this guy
to put on some dry clothes and them head out. Nope! He's soaking wet from chest down. It's only about 40 degrees in the morning, and the morning air
had a little bite to it. So what do his buddies do. They open the boat up and race across the lake with him soaking wet.
Jim and I launched, and headed to the first spot I wanted to give a try. It's the gravel bar on the south shore of the map above. Probably in the first 20 casts, I have 3 largemouth in the boat, and missed one on a crankbait. We're thinking to ourselves that this lake is going to be on today!
After working that area over without any bites. We decided to hit our next choice. With the water temperature running around 56 to 57 degrees. We figured a lot of the bass should be moved up and ready to spawn. Hopefully there would be no better place than the dark bottom bay located at the very north end of the map above. We fished the whole bay around lily pads and some laydowns. Didn't spot a single bass back there. It looked dead. I couldn't believe that they weren't in there. So we headed back out on the main lake and fished several other areas, and bays. No bites. We even went back to the area where we had caught 3 earlier. Nothing! Tried numerous lures and presentations without any results. We decided at 9:30 am to load up and hit another lake. School Lake was just down the road. Unfortunately, when we got there we found out it was a private ramp lake. Our next options were two lakes about the same distance from our point of orgin. We had to decide between Chemung and Kent lake. We chose Chemung, because it had clearer water, and figured we might find some bedding smallmouth to keep us entertained.
