We started our morning fishing around 8 am. The water on Union Lake was crystal clear. Surface temperature was running 46 to 48 degrees. There were times we
had the depth finders showing 20 feet of water, and you could see the bottom. It was really deceiving the eyes too. You would be sitting in 7 foot of water,
and it looked like 2 foot.
Crawdads littered the lake bottom. There were dead ones, and ones moving all over the place. Which probably is why this is one of top smallmouth fisheries in Oakland county. I'm sorry to say, we were a little disappointed this morning. We didn't have hardly any wind, and we could see smallmouth swimming everywhere! We just couldn't fool them with the conventional artificial baits that well. Ended up catching smallmouth on 3 different jerkbaits, blades, and on small hand poured crawdad on a jighead. The bite wasn't horrible, but it was frustrating seeing so many fish, and not being able to get them to bite. We decided to load up at 11am and head for Wamplers Lake. All but the first fish were legal length or better. Below is a photo of one of the typical fish we caught while there.
