After the warm up we had last week, I was sure I was going to be able to go and catch the open water January bass I've been after for the last couple years. Well Sunday came and it was pouring rain, but I jumped in the truck to try to find some open water somewhere. I was unsuccesful.
Well then a cold front rolled through Monday morning and took the temps back down to a seasonal norm.
I had to go work out in the field on Tuesday and every body of water I drove by was wide open. I couldnt believe it.
Well I looked at the forecast for down here today and it said it was supposed to be 37. I was working out of the house today and got a pretty early start so I could finish early, and went see if anywhere was still open. So come 2:30 I threw 3 rods and a tackle bag in the back of my truck and off I went. I drove by a big strip pit pond that was still open, but very muddy.
I made it out to my buddies farm where I caught the early open water fish last year, and it was wide open.
I grabbed a rod that had one of Ricks custom blade baits tied on and commenced to fishing.
I cast maybe a dozen times, and brought in a little stick and a ziplock baggy full of gravel (?).
Then I cast out and when I went to lift my blade bait up it was heavy. I jerked and reeled it in half thinking I had another stick, but I had my first fish of the night on. Them things were lethargic. I was tickled and never cared if I got another bite, but I ended up catching 2 more and losing one.
I fished for about an hour and a half before my hands started hurting too bad from the cold (it never come close to 37 today with a stiff breeze)
So I think for the second year in a row I got the first open water bass on the board. Nothing big, but I got to do some casting.
