A slacker, that's what I've been. I don't think I have posted in a month. I haven't really been fishing much but I have been a couple of times. Sharing a little something from this corner of the world is the least I could do.
I have been out on the water each of the last four weekends. Three weeks ago I went to the coast with an old buddy that I hadn't seen in twenty years. He and I used to fish when we were younger and we needed to catch fish if we wanted to eat. We stayed within a couple of miles of shore and caught a few seatrout, spanish mackerel, and ladyfish.
Today, last Saturday, and the Saturday before that I fished the lake I consider my home lake. It is the one I have fished (and hunted) the most over the last thirty-something years. The vegetation has really filled in and there is plenty of cover on and below the surface. Over the last few trips I have caught more fish on a 4" jerkbait than anything else. I have been using either a bang-o-lure or a Lee Sisson. Most of the fish not caught on one of those have been caught on a white Terminator T-1 spinnerbait.
The bite has been decent at first light but it has been disappearing at around 8:00-8:15. Last Saturday I caught five of my eight bass before that time and after catching them I didn't catch another one until 10:45. Early on I was catching them around pads in shallow water but as the morning went on the only bites I was able to get was in the deeper water away from the heavy surface cover. Today I had eleven of my fifteen bass by 8:00 and between then and 11:00 I only caught four more. I caught the usual jacks as well and even one big mudfish (bowfin to everyone outside of Dixie). It was the first fish of the day and it was still fairly dark. Thankfully I caught it on the flexible and somewhat durable Terminator which came through the ordeal undamaged. I can't say the same for many other lures than I've caught mudfish on. I wanted to flip some matted surface cover and I did that a little bit today. It was tough because the wind picked up pretty good. It was either pushing me away from or too close to my target. I had one fish hang me up and get away before I could get to it but I was able to wrestle one to the surface before he knew what hit him. I could have probably picked my bait with my eyes closed and it wouldn't have made any difference but I chose to flip a strike king 3x watermelon/red flake lizard.
The first three pictures are from this morning. I didn't get a picture of my best fish because he was able to jerk free after he stuck the hook in my thumb while I was attempting to lip him.

A couple from the last two weekends. Last Saturday I didn't catch any specks but I did catch two warmouth. They were the first I have caught out of that lake this year.
