Jim will fill in the details..........
I went outside at 430 AM. It was a warm 62 degrees and humid. So humid that it was like breathing underwater. I worked up a sweat just hooking up the boat and retrieving Beths cooler. The sky was clear. The full moon from earlier in the week was still providing lots of illumination. I had no trouble seeing Cast in the front yard even though he was sticking to the shadows.
Beth had cooked up a plan for us to use today. We would head North and fish an area that we had been neglecting all year. At 550 AM we pulled out of the driveway and headed for the lake. The fog was thick and heavy. It held us up so much that we arrived at the lake at around 615 AM. It's only 5.2 miles from our house. As we launched our boat I noticed that the fog was not thick on the Lake. We might be able to take part in the blast off at 7AM.
Beth and I made our way down to the docks at 645 AM. As I trolled over to the left of the main group, she readied our fishing gear. A few minutes before 7AM we started the main engine and waited for the blast off signal. As we waited, the fog blew in like something from a horror movie. We decided not to push our luck and stayed in the lower end of the lake. So much for Beths plan.
I had downsized by getting out my seldom used Quantum spinning reel with the Berkley Lightning Rod. I added a 1/16th oz. sinker, a 1/0 Owner offset worm hook and a Venom Super Doo.
The main body of anglers had sped away and into the soupy fog . Beth and I began to ply our trade on the outskirts of the weed beds. The Super Doo put the first 2 Bass in the boat for us. They were both dinks about 8 inches in length. We both boated several more as the fog dissipated from the effects of the bright sun and rising mercury in the thermometer. With no fish yet in the live well we decided to head North.
We tried numerous areas and caught fish from everyone. I switched to a 4 inch worm and found that it worked as well as the Super Doo. Eventually I tired of the little guys and went for the big bite. I pulled out my trusty worm rig and started dropping a 7 inch Power Worm into the water. I caught several more dinks on that as well.
It was a bitter pill to swallow as we ran out of time. The heat was not kind to us and neither had been the fish. We were both happy I think to call it a day and head back into weigh in. Once again we had not avoided the terrible oder of the skunk.
25 Anglers had started the day. Only 15 fish would be brought to the scales at weigh in. Not an impressive count by any means.
Mike Rodgers took first place with 3 fish that weighed 3 pounds 3 ounces.
Second place was won by Ty Smith and Rick Ruff who had 2 Bass weighing 2 pounds 15 ounces.
Big Bass was earned by the team of Bob Newman and J.D. Erich whose only fish was 15 3/4 inches long and weighed in at 2 pounds 8 ounces.
The water is still very hot. Hopefully it will start to cool down as we approach Autumn. Beth and I will see you all on the Lake next weekend.
